Andrea Falconiero, born 1586 in Naples, died there in 1656 of the plague, was above all known as a lute player. His work led him to Spain and France. From 1650 until his death he was Royal Music Director in Naples. "Due to the brightness and simplicity of his melodies, Falconiero belongs to the most outstanding Italian masters of the first half of the 17th century" (Riemann encyclopaedia of music). The two canzonas, originally meant for string instruments, are well-suited to be played by soprano recorders.
